The Glaetzer Family has been a part of the Barossa Valley and its viticulture
history since 1888.
After thirty years of winemaking, Colin Glaetzer established the family winery
to create wines he's passionate about - limited quantities of benchmark Barossa
Valley reds. The birth of Glaetzer Wines signalled a new era for Colin's family
which boasts more than it's fair share of winemakers - Colin, his
oenology-trained wife Judith and the couple's three sons, Sam, Ben & Nick.
Today, Ben Glaetzer carries on this winemaking tradition at Glaetzer Wines.
Ben's philosophy is that great wines are made in the vineyard - a belief in "terroir"
and an understanding of the ancient dry-grown vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer
district of the Barossa is evident in his wines. With minimal intervention, Ben
makes elegant wines which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossa.
Amon-Ra 2006
As the wine’s sixth release, the 2006 Amon-Ra shows the hallmark richness of the
previous vintages, yet
takes the aromatic expression to another level. The slower ripening experienced
in our shiraz created parcels
of fruit with huge intensity and perfume without any of the hot, jammy
characteristics that can become
evident with exposed fruit – a character we avoid in all of our wines at all
costs. The key to Amon-Ra is
balancing the extraction rather than maximising it. The fruit has such
expression that we aim to preserve
the characteristics of the vineyard, rather than dominate them. The similarity
has to be drawn between the
2004 and 2005 wines, the 2006 showing the freshness and refinement of the 2004
release with the tannin
structure and ageability of the 2005. It is one of our most favoured releases.
Anaperenna (formerly Godolphin) Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon
2006
The wine is a seamless fusion of two varieties: shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.
An intriguing nose of chocolate, crushed herbs, cedar, blackberries and smoke
leads into a tightly-focused palate with fine-grained tannin and incredible
density. The finish is fresh and lively with flavours that linger. The sheer
quality of the 2006 cabernet components meant that the percentage in the blend
has raised to 25% for this release. The cabernet provided compelling aromatics
of crushed herbs, fresh black fruits and espresso spice and also contributed
intensity of the palate. The shiraz components were from very similar patches of
our vineyards as the fruit weuse for Amon-Ra, the primary difference being the
Anaperenna shiraz needed to be slightly more reserved in expression to enable
the purity of the cabernet to be displayed on both the nose and the palate.
Potential cellaring of 12-14 years.
Bishop Shiraz 2006
The backbone of this full-bodied shiraz is the exceptional fruit from the
dry-grown vines of the famed
Ebenezer vineyards in Barossa Valley. Aromas of liquorice and mocha intermingle
with cassis and leather.
Opulent fruit flavours on the palate are beautifully balanced by firm, velvety
tannins from maturation in
French and American oak. This multi-layered shiraz is drinking superbly now and
it will reward cellaring for
the next decade. The 2006 is the eighth release of Bishop (we deemed the quality
of the 2000 and the 2003
vintages unsuitable for release under our label). The 2005 and 2006 have
benefited enormously from the the
input fruit that once provided the backbone for the revered Glaetzer Shiraz. The
2006 shows more tightness
than 2005 and 2004, the tannin being more pronounced in infancy but lending
itself to be truly age worthy.
Wallace Shiraz/Grenache 2006
The 2006 Glaetzer Wallace is a wine greater than the sum of its parts – a fusion
of shiraz and grenache, which
is a typical, traditional blend in the Barossa Valley. Ripe, peppery old-vine
shiraz dominates and adds weight,
texture and fleshy richness to the palate. The grenache contributes sweet
cherry, toffee and earthy characters.
Wallace is superb drinking now but it will reward careful cellaring for up to
eight years.Parcels of premium fruit are picked at full ripeness for vibrant
colour, an abundance of juicy, berry flavours and spice. The wine shows the
elegance and finesse underpinning the Glaetzer style. The creation of Wallace in
2002 enabled us to fully utilise the magnificent 80-year-old grenache vines that
we had previously not blended. The clone we have access to is light in colour,
almost rose like, yet provides a huge level of tannin extraction and therefore
lends itself to blend with shiraz. The grenache provides mid-palate richness and
a strawberry/cherry-like characteristic on the palate, and the shiraz provides
tightness and focus. The 2006 will age well for five to eight years and it will
develop further complexity after a couple of years in bottle.

XYZin wines explore the relationship of vine age to
taste profile. XYZin 100 comes from Zinfandel vines that
were at least 100 years of age at the time of harvest.
At XYZin we believe that the history of a vineyard is as
much a part of the terroir as are climate, soil, clones
and the age of its vines. XYZin Vine Age Series wines
offer a tabletop exploration of California’s unique
Zinfandel heritage.
Loads of sun-ripened blackberry fruit aromas and
flavors mingle with raspberry jam and more savory notes
of baked crusty bread. Approachably refined tannins form
a mouth-filling framework for the appealing, understated
waves of chocolate and peppery spice that lingers well
after the wine is swallowed. The rustic heritage of the
grape calls for foods prepared from hearty, honest
ingredients. Enjoy this wine best over the next 5 to 6
years.
This wine is best enjoyed with garden-fresh tomato
bruschetta, sheep’s milk cheese such as Brebiou sliced
on rosemary potato bread, or dishes flavored with
fire-roasted red peppers.
